The Ithaca is unlike other shotguns in that it ejects spent shells down. This makes it less susceptible to the elements, but also makes it the go-to gun for lefty shooters. If a lefty shoots a normal shotgun, the shells will eject into his or her face. Which is unpleasant, to say the least. Lefty shooters used to have to rely on the Ithaca or they had to become ambidextrous. Now several other manufacturers have begun to make a lefty 12-guage, but old-school shooters stick with the Ithaca.
